Quiet nights: six ways to fill rooms without cutting your price.

Low season and mid-week nights leave rooms empty. The easy fix is to drop the price on the booking sites. It works for a night or two, then costs you for months. Here are six ways to fill quiet nights and keep your rate where it is.

Why cutting the price hurts more than it looks

A price cut looks free, because an empty room earns nothing anyway. But it has three hidden costs:

  • Guests remember the low price and wait for it next time.
  • A cut on one booking site usually has to follow on every site you sell on.
  • You still pay 15–25% commission on the lower price, so your margin shrinks twice.

The good news: most guests are not looking for the cheapest price. They are looking for the best value, and all six ideas below work on that.

1. Add something instead of taking money off

Breakfast, a 2pm check-out or a welcome drink costs you a few dozen baht, but guests see it as worth several hundred. And your room rate on the booking sites never moves.

"Breakfast and a 30-minute massage included" sells better than "15% off".

2. Tell your past guests first

Past guests know you, trust you and can book direct with no commission. Send a short message on WhatsApp, Facebook or LINE: "We have 3 rooms free next Tuesday to Thursday. Book direct and breakfast is on us." One message can fill several nights.

3. Sell longer stays with a perk, not a discount

A guest booking one night may stay longer if you give them a reason. "Stay 3 nights, get a free airport transfer" or "Stay 5 nights, laundry is free" turns one night into three, and housekeeping has less to do because the room is not turned over every day.

4. Answer every message fast, especially at night

In a quiet month fewer enquiries come in, so each one is worth more. Guests often message several places at once and book with whoever answers first. If a 10pm question gets its answer at 9am, they have already booked somewhere else.

5. Sell extras, not just rooms

When you sell fewer rooms, earn more from each one. Transfers, tours, massage, dinner or scooter rental, offered in the chat while the guest is planning the trip, like an online store suggesting "frequently bought together".

6. Spot quiet nights early

Every Monday morning, look at the next 30 days. A night that is still more than half empty three weeks out gives you time to message past guests. Wait until the day itself, and the only option left is a price cut.

A checklist for this week

  • Check the next 30 days and mark the nights more than half empty
  • Pick one low-cost perk, such as breakfast or a late check-out
  • Message past guests with the dates and the offer
  • Set up an offer for stays of 3 nights or more
  • Make sure every message gets a reply within minutes, even late at night
